THE Forestry Commission is urging people in West Devon to think green and apply for funding to create valuable new woods in Devon. Grants of up to £1,500 per acre are being offered to support high-quality planting schemes that fulfil key priorities, which include broadening wildlife habitats, restoring derelict land and providing places for people to enjoy healthy exercise. However, applicants will need to act quickly to take advantage ? the deadline for applications this year is September 28. Figures show that over the past decade 24,000 acres of new woodlands have taken root in the region using Forestry Commission grants. That has brought an immense range of benefits, but more needs to be done to meet challenges such as climate change. Steve Colderick, operations manager with the Forestry Commission, said: ?Landowners and farmers are important recipients of our grants, but many other far-sighted people and organisations have gained backing for innovative schemes. There are scores of good reasons to create woodland. In doing so you can improve the environment not just in your own lifetime but for the generations that follow.?
